Cookies
For the proper functioning of a website, it is often necessary to use a certain type of file called a cookie.
Cookies are small files, under 4 KB, saved on the browsing device (desktop PC, laptop, smartphone, or tablet). Their purpose is to store information about the user of the respective website or server. This information can be accessed, similarly to storage, either by the website user or by the server. In this way, the server can provide a tailored experience to the user.
A few examples of using a cookie:
- Remembering the user's authentication session by checking the Remember log in details box
- Serving a customized interface by selecting a certain color palette of the website
By default, most web browsers have the cookie acceptance option enabled, with the possibility to disable this feature.
Also, any user can view the cookies stored on the browsing device, or delete them.
The origin of a cookie can be directly from the web server of the website in question or from external sources. For example, by using certain external services (web traffic analysis libraries) certain cookies, which are not the direct object of the website in question, can be accepted by the user's browsing device.
Cookies also have a validity period set; after its expiration, the cookies in question are automatically destroyed.
